How Safe are Home Elevators?

How Safe is Home Elevators?

It’s sad but also true that India ranks #2 in Elevator accidents in the world. This is mainly due to the installation of the wrong appliance and not keeping up with any set of standards for safety. It is shocking to know that accidents in 2018 have increased by a mind-boggling 26.8%. It is high time that we should look to bring change in this. “You must be the Change if you wish to see the Change – Mahatma Gandhi”

Let us know our rights, let’s stop being a Victim & get information on what you buy.

Also, It’s quite unfortunate to say that in INDIA there are not set standards for Home Elevators. This allows anyone to become an elevator manufacturer. Elevator manufacturing in INDIA is becoming like a cottage industry where anyone can install a moving platform and call those home elevators. Often Local manufacturers exploit consumers showing ISO certification and claiming it to be safe, however, it’s important that you should understand ISO certification is not for the product, it’s to certify that the company is organized. When you buy a helmet, you will look for ISI certification not ISO. But even ISI is not enough for countries like India.

Home Elevators should comply with Third Party safety standards to ensure the utmost safety. ThyssenKrupp home elevators comply with the European standards of safety i.e. MD 2006 42 EC, EN 81-41 and most importantly certified by TUV post-installation.

It is suggested that the home elevator can even be of Gearless and Hydraulic technology. It should be no pit, no headroom with machine less room and trap door should be placed no AC current should pass in the shaft.

In Europe if someone installs a commercial lift at home, that supplier and the customer both are subject to punishment as per law.

If you ask even some of these branded lift companies to explain difference between “Commercial and Residential lift”, you will be surprised as they’ll have nothing to say.

Safety is a major concern at home, especially with mobility equipment that is a practical solution for the elderly and the physically disabled. Injuries from accessibility equipment are often not limited to commercial lifts The more possible risk nowadays is getting stuck in a home elevator. The impact of this problem can be minimized by associating with the right elevator. To avoid accidents involving home elevators, it is crucial to be aware about the safety features that are indispensable in residential elevators and to purchase equipment that has these vital features.

With much advancement in technology, ThyssenKrupp Home Elevators provide Affordable home lifts with advanced safety features suiting various indoor and outdoor transportation needs. These features include:

•        SSS (Soft Start and Stop)

•        TUV Compliance

•        SIL-3 - Seismic Stability Structure

•        ENS (Error Notifications System)

To summarise, this is a checklist to know whether your home elevator is safe or not.

•        All home elevators should run on a single-phase power supply.

•        Pit size should not be more than 100-150mm and no headroom space is required.

•        There should not be any A/c current running through the shaft.

•        No safety features should be neglected

•        It should comply with Machine Directive 2006 42 EC & EN 81 – 41

•        Trap door should be available inside the cabin

•        Ensure you are getting the lift certified by TUV post-installation to guarantee

Recent Advancement in Home Elevator Technology

The growth in the construction sectors and new innovations have changed the way elevators function and how they can be serviced. From smart to “green” elevators, many advancements have recently been made. ThyssenKrupp is one of those very few companies that actually set a trend in Industries. ThyssenKrupp home lifts have brought upon a revolution in the aspects of safety certifications. ThyssenKrupp Home lifts’ entire line up is certified with both TUV and SIL-3 certification. Other advance innovations in the Elevator industry is as follows.

Smart Elevators

Just like smart phones and TVs, elevators are getting pretty high-tech, prompting elevator manufacturers to make adjustments in speed and safety.

A smart elevator is a type in which a passenger presses a button for the floor they wish to visit, an indicator directs them to a specific elevator that will handle the task the fastest. Such advanced routing will more efficiently move passengers, particularly during high-traffic hours in busy hotels, high rises, apartments and office buildings. They can even be programmed to operate in different ways at certain periods throughout a given day.

Similarly, this tech is very efficient in-home purpose elevators as well as it indicates the floor levels giving the right direction for the user. It can be programmed to shut off during certain intervals to conserve energy.

ThyssenKrupp’s Home Lifts are  This technology works by sending real-time alerts to the user about a problem that is just starting to develop. This is designed to save money and time on repairs. Sensors gather the data about factors such as usage that can impact wear and tear on parts. The information is sent to a cloudbased platform for processing and analysis so companies can predict when maintenance will be needed. In addition, some aspects of elevator functionality could be remotely operated.

ThyssenKrupp Home Elevators are completely automatic and uses the latest PMS (Permanent Magnet Synchronous) Technology. This technology helps in getting rid of outdated devices like the sensors and relays. The mounted rail system uses the GLR Technology (Greaseless Technology) which eliminates the use of grease on the guide rails installed. ThyssenKrupp uses a system known as Advanced Error Notification System which helps in fixing errors before it happens.

Virtual Reality Diagnostics

Virtual reality headsets can change the way mechanics perform elevator repairs, allowing them to diagnose a problem without having to risk their safety by climbing several floors or hanging from a lift shift. The mechanic simply puts the glasses on, using hand motions to explore the engine and individual parts in more depth. You can also widen the view in order to complete a virtual “walk through” to see what needs to be repaired or replaced.

ThyssenKrupp HoloLine is the latest innovation which provides remote access and helps the mechanics to visualize and identify problems ahead of a job, and have remote, hands-free access to technical and expert information when onsite- all resulting in significant savings in time and stress

Green Elevators

Green elevators not only save on energy consumption, but they also save on the materials, processes, and technologies that are used. Plus, savings can be experienced on interior paints, flooring, lighting, control panels and HVAC systems. Some features include:

•        Machine-room-less (MRL) technology

•        Gearless traction design

•        Drive systems to recover and regenerate energy

•        Precision traffic control

•        Computerized systems to reduce light-load trips

•        In-cab sensors and software that will go into sleep mode when not in use, such as music, video, lighting and ventilation

•        Destination dispatch control software to batch elevator stop requests

ThyssenKrupp Home Elevators also contribute to the green initiative by providing elevators that has the following features:

1.    Single Phase Power, (1.4KVA power consumption) for rise and no power is consumed during descending.

2.    No Machine rooms

3.    No Pit

4.    TUV Compliance

5.    In the hydraulic drive system, the oil used is biodegradable and the cog belt gearless drive system uses a counterweight balance which enables it to be energy efficient.

How Home Elevator Helps Mobility Solution

Mobility in a residence from one floor to next can be provided by any lift manufacturer where that may be by any commercial traction lift manufacturer or by any local hydraulic home elevator manufacture but the concern is how safe it is for a Private House where children and old age above 70 years people who might not be aware of modern technologies that the lift holds.

Here comes Thyssenkrupp Home Elevator into action: Thyssenkrupp home elevator follows machine directive EN81, which means measuring your safety- from all parts of the lift mechanism and manufacturing. It is built as per your customization and size at ThyssenKrupp’s Italian warehouse and send it in completely knock down pack at the site and authorised engineers only assemble them at the site. And after complete installation the elevator is checked by TUV to certify it for safe use which includes 194 safety parameters.

Whereas what other home elevator manufacturer do is that they come to site, and do all hassles of assembling and welding at your site according to your available space and dimension which includes tap-loon tapping. This is the very reason they are not complying with the machine directive codes and that is a call for accident and not safety. Besides few of the parts by local manufacturers are certified and branded. From their engineering to their complete installations at site are not tested by authorities like TUV.

Maybe a home Elevator from any provider might help mobility from one floor to the next but after installation from Local manufactures there is usually a lots of obstacles each time, to quote some instances- Door opening issues where people are stuck inside, oil leakage at piston issues, sensor not working issues where most of the accident occurs, cable & wires related and many more. Whereas Thyssenkrupp Home lifts have TUV certification while completing installations and thus these kinds of issues do not arise. Alongside this, Thyssenkrupp introduced Error notification System (ENS) which provides any error issues notification in advance to the User and Manufacturer through state of the art IoT connectivity (Internet of things). An IoT device operates through a dedicated internet & server.  And Door related issues don’t happen with Thyssenkrupp which is maintained by Magnetic driven control, which provides appropriate landing at all stoppage.

A mobility solution also has a part of service continuity whenever required, which is irregularly with local manufactures because of shortage of service personnel, whereas Thyssenkrupp’s Grease Lease Rail (GLR), Magnetic Driven Control & Error notification system helps you to use the mobility solution for your Home continuously with very minimal man driven maintenance.
